In September 1999 Art Mason and I (Don Hinckfoot) purchased the sailboat Absolute, a Peterson 37, built by Wiggins’, Ontario Canada in 1982, for scrap value. Absolute sat in dry dock for over 5 years uncovered and none of the plug hardware was pulled in the bottom to allow rain water to drain and the water was over the engines oil dip stick. We spent the next two years repairing the deck and transoms fiber glass and balsa, replaced a number of the oak stringers along the bottom and up the side of the hull. A new 3-cylinder diesel engine with an angled transmission was installed on new oak motor mounts. The major renovations were completed in late May 2001. Absolute was purchased without sails and used sails had to be bought and re-cut for racing. July 2001 Absolute did its first major race, the Bayview Mackinac Race - long course (South Hampton). A used re-cut main was delivered late Friday night the day before the big race. This turned out to be Absolute’s first race and shake down since its purchase in 1999 and it finished 15th out of 18 boats. In the 2002 Bayview Mackinac Race Absolute finished 5th out of 20 boats in its class and in the 2003 Bayview Mackinac Race Absolute took a 1st place in its class. Absolute has done two Chicago Mackinac Races 2007 and 2008 (100 Th.). Absolute and the crew are looking forward to doing the 2009 Chicago Mackinac Race (101 St.) and continuing on for the 2009 SUPER MAC to Port Huron. Then turn around and compete in the 2009 Bayview Mackinac Race (85 Th) doing the old traditional long course the Cove Island Course ORR. Absolute is a great sailboat and since the time it was built in 1982 for racing it has loved to race. Art and I take great pride in Absolute and we’re proud that we were able to salvage Absolute to keep it racing.

“Blue” is a Riptide 41 owned and skippered by Michael Schoendorf of Delafield, WI. "Blue" was designed by Paul Bieker, the principle designer of the America's Cup winner, Oracle, and is constructed in all carbon by Betts Industries in Washington State.

"Blue" is here to race, but they're also on a mission. They're SAILING FOR WATER. Schoendorf has created a 501c3 organization – “Blue H2O” - to promote and financially address the hardships millions of people endure simply because they don’t have ready access to potable water.

This year they have dedicated themselves to raise money for the Navajo Water Project.

Did you know that...there are more than 70,000 people in New Mexico without tap or toilet water... ...that they get their water from outdoor barrels that are filled once a month...that they are rationed to 6 gallons of water a day when the average American uses 70 gallons a day?

Blue H2O wants to be a part of the solution and so we are on an all out mission to raise enough money this season to put running water for basic needs such as cleaning, washing and toilets in as many homes as possible, but we can only accomplish this with your help.

Contribute what you can! 10¢ for every mile of the Bay View-Mackinaw’s Cove Island course, which would equate to about $25.00 would be a great help.

Please visit www.blue4water.org and donate today. www.blue4water.org

Blue H20 does not and will not fund any aspect of the "Blue" racing or operational program.

Everyone who sails on Blue this year will make a donation via www.blue4water.org. We hope you will consider doing so as well. Good sailing! -The Bluenatics

They dedicate this and all future races to their Father Edwin A. Bayer Jr. who passed away several years ago at the age of 85. Ed was a proud Old Goat who taught his entire family to race and has been an inspiration to all!

Falcon was the 2005, 2006, 2011 & 2012 J-35 North American Champion and has won its J-35/T-35 One Design Class in three Mac Races. Falcon's experienced crew has over 200 Bayview Mac Races between them.

This race will make Fred Blackmer an Old Goat and mark Ed Bayer's 49th Mac, John Bayer's 42th, Mike Welch's 33rd, Ron Rossio's 31st! So 5 of Falcon's 10 crew this year are Old Goat's and another crew, Brian Beaudet, is knocking on the Old Goat door with 22 macs completed.

This is the boat's second Mac race but not the first Mac race for the skipper. After having to retire last year due to storm damage, the crew looks forward to winning a flag this year. The crew includes seasoned and beginning sailors. We have an older, slower boat, but we like to say: We're not slow, we're on corrected time. We proudly represent the Tawas Bay Yacht Club and the Royal Western Yacht Club of Ireland. See you on the island.

History. Boats named "Rowdy" have been raced in the Bayview Mackinac Races for the past 39 consecutive years by Val A. Saph. The name comes from a former Bayview boat - a 61' J-40 owned by former Bayview member Ril Wigle, and chartered by Val and other teenagers for 2 week trips on Lakes Huron and Michigan, and Georgian Bay, in the late 1950's. That boat was noted for its leopard skin interior, wild parties and coming close to going over Niagra Falls until the anchor held when Ril took a wrong turn. It was now in Europe after an extensive refit. The current Rowdy is a Thomas 35 raced in the Bayview Mackinac Race since 1990. It has taken first place in its class in 1991, 1993 and 2007. The current crew have raced with Val for many years. This crew consists of Jim Butlin, who has raced 6 meters successfully, and on Rowdy, for many years. The rest of the crew, in order of "seniority" consists of Joe Banka, a retiree, Jim Schiller, a bar owner, Tom Heaslip, a Detriot firefighter, Val C. Saph, a Chrysler employee and the owner's nephew , Darren Shavinski, a postman, Nick Lounsbury, a college student, and Terry Wolf, a US Postoffice adminitrator.. Former crew member, Kent Herzer, who was lost off this boat on a return trip after a Mackinac race and sailed on all 3 Rowdys owned by Val, is still sorely missed by everyone. Rowdy is proud to represent Port Huron Yacht Club, which has always warmly welcomed the Bayview/Mackinac racers to Port Huron.

This Hinterhoeller Nonsuch 30 Ultra has been rechristened as "Tribute" to honor the memory of my father Joseph Wenzler as well as the storied past of this prolifically sailed vessel. "Big Joe" was who introduced me and to the sport of sailing He has impacted the lives of many of those participating in this years Mackinac by sharing his love of sailing, the lakes, the sea and its lore. The new Hull color of Tribute echoes the colors of the boat we raced with dad, the good ship Rubicon. In addition, the Nonsuch Class tradition of laughter, great food, and loud sonorous voices pays tribute to the great lessons we have learned from my parents, and all those others that had a positive impact on the sport and our connection with the water...

The boat was first delivered to the Black River in 1987.All the deck hardware and electronics were installed at the dock before the race by sailmakers and the boat builder Ken Fickett. The boat was sailed in Saginaw bay for a few years, then it was sold and taken to Lake Erie, then to Waukegan, Illinois, then to Chicago ,where I found it rotting away at a marina in downtown Chicago. I brought it back to its original home on Saginaw Bay in Bay City, Mi. I spent six months refurbishing it to its original condition.

His father still sails the Mac. He is keeping the family tradition going with gusto. Another crew member is a retired high school teacher whose students undoubtedly miss her daily. Four attorneys make the boat one in which the wind never dies.

That was also the year that it won its class and its division in the Mackinac race. The boat is now owned by Kurt Keydel's sons Eric and Conrad.
