Dear Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race (BBBMR) Skippers, Crew, Sponsors and Spectators:
Race preparations are moving along with less than 3 months before the 94thrunning of the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race, and we hope to see all of you there.
There are more than 165 volunteers that are needed to run this Race. March 21stwas the first Race Committee Chair’s meeting to start the process of setting up this year’s Race. The following is some of what we discussed.
There is an old adage that says…if you want to keep a secret from the sailors, put it in the Sailing Instructions. All changes to the Race will be clearly outlined in the Sailing Instructions when they are posted. Please don’t let them be a secret to you!
We continue to make upgrades to our new finish line trailer and Race Committee equipment. The finish line pole this year will change from the orange lighted cylinder of years past to a new flag pole (a carbon DN iceboat mast donated by Ron Sherry) brightly lit with blue LED rope lights. We have upgraded our spot light and binocular tripods to make sighting your boat when you are finishing more clearly. We ask that you use your Reflective Sailboard(as outlined in both Monohull and Multihull SER 3.13) as required by the Sailing Instructions. If you do not use your reflective sailboard as outlined in the Sailing Instructions, you will be subject to protest by the Race Committee. If you need a new placard, we have a vendor who promised to make them for $125 plus tax. You can contact Bill Lince of SIGNMAN at 586-915-6430.
We are working on a new docking procedure to make it easier for each competitor to know where they will be moored. We will have LED lighted arm bands and colored t-shirts for each of the Harbor and Inspection Committee members so that you can easily identify them.
We anticipate requiring pre-race inspection of all new boats to the BBBMR.We are also working to set up a post-race inspection dock on Mackinac Island. Stay tuned for updates to the inspection process.
Each year the Race Committee boat at the starting line receives race day crew substitutions from competitors over VHF channel 71. This is a reminder that the RC does not approve those substitutions, they merely record them. Each competitor is required to ensure that any crew substitution does not exceed the crew weight declared on their ORR or ORR-EZ certificate.
Safety at Sea Seminar:
April 21-22 was the US Sailing Safety at Sea seminar. We were granted Coast Guard approval for a live Helicopter Rescue in the Detroit River and right in front of the club. The Helo demonstration was very cool!
ORR and ORR-EZ Ratings:
ORR rating renewal notices were sent out on March 12th, and ORR-EZ on April 2nd. If you have not received yours, please contact ORA directly at the web addresses below. If you have delayed registering for the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race until you have applied for your rating, you can now do both. When you receive your rating you can upload it to your registration page. And don’t forget a current insurance certificate that does not expire until afterthe Race.
For ORR ratings the link is https://ucs.ussailing.org/#/welcome, and for ORR-EZ it is https://offshoreracingassociation.org/component/rsform/form/3-application-for-orr-ez-rating. These links are also on the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race website at http://bycmack.com/.
Official BBBMR Merchandise:
Official race SWAG is now available on the Bayview Mack website at www.bycmack.com. Lots of great clothing, so check it out. Last year I purchased a black long sleeve zippered shirt and a pull over shell that I just love!
Please go to our website often where we will post all competitor notifications and updates, as well as the calendar of important dates.
In closing I would like to thank our sponsors and supporters for the race: Bell’s Brewery, Grand Hotel, Gill, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry, North Sails, Pentastar Aviation, Aitken & Ormond Insurance, Frankenmuth Insurance, Coral Reef Sailing Apparel, Vortexx Pressure Washers, Sykes Webster, Bayview Yacht Club Foundation, Detroit Sports Media, Marx Layne, Futuramic Tool and Engineering, General RV Center, It’s Your Window, Marygrove Awnings, Mike’s Marine Supply, Offshore Spars and Thomas Hardware Company.
